Making manu aute (kites)

Wait till you see the end result whānau. Manu aute is a general name for Māori kites. 
Māori kites were covered with the bark of the aute (paper mulberry) plant We couldn't get our hands on any of these plants so we improvised. We used the leaves from the Nikau palm tree.

Raupō (bulrush) was used as covering on a number of smaller kites. But in these photos the nikau plant. Not good for flying kites but it sure is going to look good as a display piece. Looking forward to posting up the finished product whānau.

Whare tupuna

In our te reo Māori classes we have been learning about the whare tūpuna (ancestral house) and the whakairo (carvings) in the front of the whare.

Waiata tāwhito

Tēnā koutou whānau. So last year I came across a waiata on youtube. I thought we would give it a go for our school kapahaka group.  Does anyone know if we are allowed to sing the waiata. Check out the link. The Matua twins & Grace Takawe

Whānau ma, is their anyone out there that can teach our girls the poi otherwise I'm going to have to teach them a poi and it probably ain't going to look pretty. Might post a video of me doing the poi. It's my way of saying heeeeeelp. Holla back at your POI... I mean BOY..
