 Creating kites

Photography and whakatauki (part 1)

He Kākano reminds us of the opportunity we have at Greenmeadows Intermediate School. To make new beginnings, to plant, to nurture, to cherish, to realise potential, to grow and enhance the life of our natural world. He Kākano is a symbol of productivity.

Truly engaged. Māuri ora.

Whānaungatanga is about building relationships through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging.

Making manu aute (kites)

Wait till you see the end result whānau. Manu aute is a general name for Māori kites.
Māori kites were covered with the bark of the aute (paper mulberry) plant We couldn't get our hands on any of these plants so we improvised. We used the leaves from the Nikau palm tree.

Raupō (bulrush) was used as covering on a number of smaller kites. But in these photos the nikau plant. Not good for flying kites but it sure is going to look good as a display piece. Looking forward to posting up the finished product whānau.

Waiata tāwhito

Tēnā koutou whānau. So last year I came across a waiata on youtube. I thought we would give it a go for our school kapahaka group.  Does anyone know if we are allowed to sing the waiata. Check out the link. The Matua twins & Grace Takawe
Why not aye?

Hutia te rito o te harakeke
Hutia te rito o te harakeke                                         Kei hea te komako e ko
Ki mai ki ahau
He aha te mea nui te mea nui o tenei ao
Maku e ki atu kia koe
He tangata, he tangata.
If the center shoot of the flax is pulled out
Where will the bellbird sing
If you were to ask me
What is the most important thing in the world
I would reply
It is people, it is people, it is people.

Have an awesome weekend everyone.

POI.

Whānau ma, is their anyone out there that can teach our girls the poi otherwise I'm going to have to teach them a poi and it probably ain't going to look pretty. Might post a video of me doing the poi. It's my way of saying heeeeeelp. Holla back at your POI... I mean BOY..

Nau mai awhi mai whānau.

Pepeha presentations are coming up

Tēnā koutou katoa. Just a reminder that your pepeha presentations are coming up. Also I have been reading through all your emails. I am happy to answer any questions you have about your pepeha. I am so proud of you all. And just remember:

Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu.

Although it is small, it is precious

Here's a snap shot of some of the students working in peers memorizing their pepeha.
I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO LISTENING TO YOUR PEPEHA.

Mean Māori Mean.

Polyfest.

 Tore kai huruhuru (young warrior)

Warriors come out to play. It didn't matter how long the students had to wait in line to get a tā moko because it was all worth it. Tērā te mahi a te rangatira. That's how the chiefs roll.

 Neat alright.
Always good to see students from other Manurewa schools sitting together harmoniously. :)
Ko te kanohi, ānō he rangi raumati paruhi kau ana. The face, it was like a beautiful summer day LOL

Want to learn a whakatauki? (Māori proverb)

This is a whakatauki/ waiata/ karakia that we have been learning here at GIS.

Tuhia ki te rangi
Tuhia ki te whenua
Tuhia ki te ngākau o ngā tangata
Ko te mea nui
ko te aroha
Tihei (wa) mauri ora.

Write it in the sky
Write in the land
Write it in the hearts of all people
For the greatest thing is love
Behold there is life.

If I get one hundred comments I'll upload a video of me singing the waiata.

Mean Māori Mean

Tēnā koutou whānau. It has been an awesome start to the week and I do have to say that the students have thoroughly enjoyed the learning in our Te Reo Māori classes. One day if you're not busy, pop on down to one of our classes.

Check back in next week with photos and more updates.
